Now, we know that hormones are signals between our brain and body.
The main hormones to consider for metabolism are:
The sex hormones (estrogens and testosterone)
Insulin
Adrenal hormones
The last two are the ones I want to focus on.
Let's start with insulin.
Insulin comes from the pancreas and regulates the body's sugar levels. It determines blood sugar and what sugar is stored in the liver, muscles, and fat. Insulin is the most important hormone in energy regulation in our body. It's the focal point of any type of metabolic dysfunction - including weight gain.
Any type of sugar or starch will spike your insulin and if your body isn't efficient at handling that, or you're eating too much of these things, your pancreas has to do a large "dump" of insulin into the body...and this can lead to complications that might cause insulin resistance. Long-term insulin resistance is type 2 diabetes.
A major reason so many people have insulin imbalance is because we simply eat too much.
Processed carbohydrates are far more likely to boost your insulin than non-processed foods.
Now, let's talk about the adrenal glands.
The adrenals produce fight or flight hormones (including epinephrine - "adrenaline" - and cortisol) as well as our sex hormones.
When you're under stress, your adrenals release epinephrine and this tells the body to release its stored sugar in the liver and muscles, leading to an insulin dump...which can lead to a cortisol spike.
It all goes together.
If your blood sugar is already high from too many sugars or processed carbs, this causes metabolic dysfunction and disease.
So, to start balancing your hormones: it starts on your plate.
